Günther pianola, Brussels, 1922

The first pianolas or player pianos are created around 1895. This new instrument is an instant success, becoming so important around 1920 that almost all piano builders in the world are presenting pianolas in their catalogues. Due to the pneumatic parts the pianolas were very big and heavy, making them difficult to handle. The piano builder Günther found a smart solution by building the piano in two parts, making it easier for transport and the passing of small doorways. The success of the pianola is abruptly ended by the success of the vinyl and gramophone.
